Learning Introductory Physics with Activities

Chapter 3 Forces

We will now begin a new topic, perhaps the most foundational in all of physics: Forces.
Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this chapter, you will be able to:
  1. Differentiate between contact forces and non-contact forces
  2. State and apply Newton’s laws
  3. Draw a free-body diagram of an object or multiple objects in a system
  4. Define the normal force acting on an object in various situations
  5. Define tension in a system
  6. Construct net force equations in multiple dimensions for an object based on its acceleration and its free-body diagram
  7. Solve net force equations symbolically in terms of given variables
  8. Include friction force acting between two objects at rest or in motion
  9. Identify Newton’s third law force pairs
  10. Analyze systems of massive objects and pulleys of negligible mass using a force approach
